Horse Training Course See All Times

January 18, 2015

Our current herd is providing us a unique opportunity. In our barn there are three yearlings, one foal and also three horses that all have been ridden before but are defined as "green broke." We plan on starting them again from scratch this winter, along with beginning foundation work with the yearlings. As a result we have the ability to extend an invitation to not only watch Erika and learn how to train horses, but to be an integral part of the experience.

This course will not be built as a skill lesson class, but as a mentoring course with Erika as the mentor and guide. The skills and lessons will be based on people's commitment. What you put into it will be reflected in the repertoire of experiences you gain. Training horses is not a textbook affair but a relationship and partnership building experience used to develop routines. My goal is not to give all participants a "how-to" lesson but to give the opportunity to develop a toolbox of multiple theories and skills to develop a better and deeper understanding of horse behavior, riding expectations, and greater knowledge of the equestrian sport as a whole.

This course will cater to both beginner and more advanced students, with every student working within their own abilities and skill sets. No student will be required to ride horses that are not suited for their ability, but should be enthusiastic about developing foundational work that is much needed before a horse is ever mounted. Opportunities will be available for both independent, personal growth and specialization within a community of other individuals to provide support, advice and observations. The course is designed to provide individuals with an opportunity to truly develop horsemanship, not just riding skills.

The course will consist of weekly group workshop sessions, unlimited "lab" time and on demand private mentor sessions with Erika. A huge part of this course will be the opportunity to do these "labs." These session are times where training apprentices can schedule to come and work with the horses on their own time. This is a "make your own schedule" course!
